A
deaf/hard of hearing class (formerly known as
hearing impaired) is located at Peeples. Students
with varying degrees of hearing loss are served
through the program. Various methods of
instruction are used to teach these students,
based upon their particular needs. Small
group instruction in a resource class may be
utilized, collaborative support within the regular
classroom may be used or consultation with the
regular education teacher may the method used.
Sign language is utilized as needed, as well as,
assistive technology. Some students may have a
ceiling soundfield system within the regular
classroom to amplify the teacher's voice above the
level of background noise. These ceiling systems
include a speaker in the ceiling and a teacher
microphone. Other deaf/ hard of hearing students
may have personal FM systems that perform the same
function, except that the other students within
the classroom do not hear the teachers voice
amplified. These personal systems include a
hearing aid component and a teacher microphone.
