Raising Kids
Guiding Students to Own and Solve Their Problems
The
Five Steps:
-
Provide a strong dose of empathy. (What a bummer!
That’s got to be frustrating! Oh, that’s never good.)
-
Hand the problem back in a caring way. (What are you
going to do?)
-
If the child has difficulty, ask permission to share
some possible solutions and provide choices. (Are you
interested in how others have solved this? – provide
some options that you – the parent – are happy with.)
-
Help the child evaluate the potential consequences of
each solution. (How would that work for you?)
-
Allow the student to solve or not solve the problem.
(Good luck. Let me know how it works out!)
Then, you hope that he/she will have
another problem soon to practice again. We want children
to make mistakes and solve problems now while the
consequences are relatively minor. When you solve all
your child’s problems, you take away valuable learning
experiences. Problem solving is a skill we all need in
order to have productive and fulfilling lives.

Guidance
Services
Think of a
consultant parent as someone who provides guidance
services for their children. The following will
help you become a consultant parent:
- Take care
of yourself
- Provide
alternatives
- Allow
natural consequences to take place
